How to upgrade to business full fibre with a government gigabit voucher

2018 has seen the UK government put their money where their mouths are by offering a voucher scheme to help businesses, and groups of residents, to upgrade their broadband connectivity to full fibre.

The gigabit voucher scheme was announced with a £67m budget enabling businesses to apply for up to £2,500 towards their upgrade costs.

The supplier led application scheme is open right now, and you can apply through us. But first, let's take a deeper look into the government's Gigabit Voucher scheme and work out if it's for your business.

Business eligibility for the Gigabit Voucher scheme

Small to medium-sized businesses are eligible to apply for a Gigabit Voucher to upgrade their broadband to full fibre.

Your business needs to employ fewer than 250 people and have an annual turnover of less than €50m or an annual balance sheet that doesn't exceed  €43m.

Sole traders are able to apply for the vouchers alongside other types of business.

Finally, you must not have exceeded more than the permitted amount of de minimis aid in the last 3 years.

What is de minimis aid?

The European Commission defines de minimis aid as none-project related public funding that can be given for most purposes.

A business must not receive over €200,000 in public funding in a 3 year period in various forms (grants, loans, subsidised contracts, etc.).

Who is and isn't included in the 250 staff count?

When reviewing your staff count for your application, you should consider that apprentices or students engaged in vocational training do not count as staff.

Additionally, staff on maternity or parental leave don't need to be included in your headcount.

Although, your headcount should include all other full-time, part-time, temporary and seasonal staff.

What's the process to apply for a Gigabit Voucher?

The process is complete within six steps in total, these are:

  1. Find a registered supplier & sign up for a Gigabit-capable connection.
  2. Your new supplier will contact the government to request the voucher. You will receive an email from the government requesting confirmation that you'd like to go ahead.
  3. Your supplier will begin work to lay the required cables to make your new connection possible.
  4. When you're connected your supplier will contact the government to tell them that the work has been completed.
  5. The government checks with you to see if the connection is working.
  6. The government makes their final checks and makes their payment.
