Impartially compare UK broadband, fibre, 4G & 5G WAN data link markets 01704 542 420
As you may have heard, EE was the first mobile network in the UK to roll out 5G and then Vodafone followed with their first 5G services at the beginning of July 2018.
Although, the initial EE rollout wasn't without it's problems (BBC live broadcast over 5G network cuts out due to technical problems), other sources have reported speeds that are much faster than 4G.
Teething problems aside, 5G promises to eradicate the need for fibre optic links by enabling faster speeds and more bandwidth via the use of higher frequencies.
The 5G network will have a much larger capacity than 4G, enabling thousands of devices in a small area to be connected at the same time.
Plus, other UK mobile networks plan to roll out their services throughout this year too.
With promised speeds of 1-10Gbit/s, 5G cannot be ignored. It could provide huge advantages in places with a high concentration of connected devices in one area.
5G may also be used to provide an alternative WAN link, or satisfy a need for greater speeds and bandwidth. We've already been using 4G to bolster WAN connectivity to cover fibre outages or lack of infrastructure, and we believe that 5G could provide the next evolution in those situations.
4G delivers speeds of up to 60Mbit/s. 5G would provide a massive improvement of 1-10Gbit/s - potentially making fibre optic look outdated and slow.
EE has switched on their 5G network in six cities: London, Cardiff, Belfast, Edinburgh, Birmingham and Manchester. It will not be available everywhere in those places, but it should be available in some.
EE have committed to rolling out their network to 1,500 sites by the end of the year, including the "busiest parts" of Bristol, Coventry, Glasgow, Hull, Leeds, Leicester, Liverpool, Newcastle, Nottingham and Sheffield.
Vodafone have just launched in: Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Glasgow, Manchester, Liverpool and London. By the end of the year, they plan to extend their service to: Birkenhead, Blackpool, Bournemouth, Guildford, Newbury, Portsmouth, Plymouth, Reading, Southampton, Stoke-on-Trent, Warrington and Wolverhampton.
